Prince Felipe de Borbón made his first official visit to Asturias as its Prince on 24th September 1980 to attend the formal signing of the Prince of Asturias Foundation memorandum of association. Except in 1984 when he was unable to attend because he was studying in Canada, he has visited Asturias every year since then to present the Awards which bear his name.
